Admissions Policy
Journeys School does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion or national origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, financial aid programs or any other school administered programs.
Admissions decisions are based on previous student performance, effort, ability, citizenship and attendance. Also considered is the commitment of the student and family to the school program and philosophy. As a guide, the Admissions Committee will also consider whether:
1. Journeys School has an appropriate program to meet the student's needs;
2.
the student is interested in our unique school community where scholarship, leadership and service are preeminent;
3. the parents are interested in supporting both Journeys School mission and its students, staff, faculty, and administration, and
4. the parents understand fully the financial and time commitment expected.
The Admissions Director or representative from the Admissions Committee together with additional faculty will meet with all interested applicants. We expect that the parents and the child visit the school, preferably when school is in session, and that the decision to enroll is a joint and mutual decision between parent and child. Students will be selected from the applicant pool based on availability of space, the makeup of the particular grade-level and family commitment to the philosophy of the school. Records of each applicant's past educational experiences and teacher recommendations are required to better assess the developmental level of the student.
Kindergarten
Enrollment into kindergarten is open to children who will be five years old by September 15 of the admission year.
Pre-Kindergarten
For admission into the Journeys School Pre-Kindergarten program, a student must:
1. Have reached a developmental stage to benefit from a program designed for four and five year olds. Typically this would mean the child should be four years of age by September 15 of the year of enrollment, although some three year olds may be ready for the program. Three-year-olds would complete two years of pre-kindergarten before continuing into the kindergarten program.
2. Have completed all the steps of the admissions process and be considered by the Admissions Committee to be a good match with Journeys Schools’ unique mission and curriculum.
The choice of days at the Pre-Kindergarten level is dependent upon the makeup of each admitted group of students and how the group of students will be best served by the Pre-Kindergarten program. A family will be asked to select their preference of a 2-day (Tuesday and Thursday), 3-day (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), or 5-day program (Monday through Friday), but this will not guarantee that particular choice. Families can submit applications for children beginning on September 1 of the year prior to entrance.
The Admissions Committee will consider siblings of currently enrolled students with higher weight in the admissions process.
Once a student is accepted into the pre-kindergarten program, he/she does not need to re-apply for kindergarten. Two exceptions would be in the unlikely event the number of pre-kindergarten students exceeds the number of available kindergarten spaces or if circumstances exist that might prevent a student from being served at the kindergarten level.
